Smart Gardening Methods for Each Season

Whole gardening books have been devoted to the different conditions of soil–even for casual and weekend gardeners to think about. You already know that pH is important for your soil but there are other things for gardeners to think about too.

Consider Soil Quality

Soil grade and proper drainage are two other areas that are also incredibly important. You can have soil that has too much or not enough water drainage and the soil might be clumpy or bulky or even too fine. So how do you know what to do, and what is the best way to go about all this? The truth is that what you want to plant will make all of the decisions for you.

Plan the Layout

You can try something new if you don’t mind drawing, so get a pen and paper and a cup of your favorite beverage and have a seat. What we suggest you do is make a detailed map or plan of all your gardens. Your flower gardens can come out looking fantastic by planning in this manner. If you choose to do a vegetable garden, this precise planning will let you get the most out of your allocated space. If you get the details on how much space each vegetable plant needs, then you can figure out how many to plant in each row. You will be able to save time and space when planting when you figure out how many plants you can fit in the space.

Buy Quality Bulbs

If you go on to the Internet or read gardening magazines, you have by now seen all sorts of different ads for bulbs. There’s nothing wrong with this, per se, but it is still important that you are careful about where you buy your bulbs. If you find a bulb supplier online that you like, then that is great. For us, however, we much prefer buying our bulbs from nurseries in our local area. The primary reason for this is that we can actually touch them and inspect them–check out their firmness, etc. You should give that a try, first – plus, we love visiting nurseries, anyway.

Protect Yourself

We want to give you a small reminder here about keeping your skin healthy when you are gardening in the sun. There has been much education and awareness about overexposure to the sun so this information probably isn’t new to you. Its so easy to lose track of time when working in the garden and often before you know it, you have spent hours out there. Getting caught up in the garden work is so easy to do that we forget to use good skin protection. Be aware that you need to be thinking of skin protection anytime you plan to work in your garden.

Nothing beats gardening tips that are gained from real world experience and found out by real people. When you’re new to all of this, the best thing that you can do for yourself is to familiarize yourself with the friendly staffers at your local nursery. Visiting those businesses around you not only supports local business, but you can make friends and get some helpful gardening ideas and help along the way.
